Fantasy MMA…Wow What!?
That’s right, DraftKings is again raising the bar of fantasy sports by offering DFS mixed martial arts.
This is one of the most interesting things I’ve seen in a while and is the newest fantasy sport since sites offered soccer.
From Blood Sport to Sport
Dana White has done the exact opposite with the UFC compared to what Don King has done with boxing. When I was about 10 years old I actually attended the first UFC in Denver, Colorado.
There were no weight classes, rounds, or rules (with the exception of no biting and no fish hooking) at that time. The UFC originally started out as a eight man tournament and the winner won fifty thousand dollars.
The UFC was almost mimicking the movie Blood Sport where if you win, you move on to the next round that was later that night. I remember watching Royce Gracie winning a match that went on for about half an hour until he final won.
The Criticisms of MMA
The criticism of the UFC was it was too barbaric and was similar to dog fighting for humans.
I would have to agree because I remember a lot of crazy stuff like a guy winning a fight by punching another guy repeatedly in the nuts.
I also remember watching a 170 pound man fighting a 300 plus pound sumo wrestler and a match ending with a guy stomping on another man’s head.
The only good thing the original format brought to the “sport” was attention, and a lot of it.
A Better Business Model of UFC Was Born
Then Dana White became the president and really transformed the UFC into a ligament sport. He made weight classes, implied more rules and gave the sport more structure by adding rounds.
One of the reasons that we are able to play fantasy MMA is because Dana White made the best business decisions to make the UFC what it is today.
He made fighters sign contracts where they have to fight X amount of times in a year.
This is great for the people who follow the sport because you can see your favorite fighter multiple times a year compared to the most popular boxers who would fight maybe once every year and a half.
So Now We Have Daily Fantasy MMA From DraftKings!
The rules for fantasy MMA look like the following:
Where gambling basically ruined boxing, I believe that Fantasy MMA is going to change the way people watch UFC events.
You will have involvement with most of the fight card that night and you can still win fantasy matches even if one or two of your fighters lose.
I remember back when I was in college, I went to Vegas and had tickets to a Roy Jones Jr fight. Granted I sold the tickets and am glad I did because Jones Jr got knocked out in the second round.
I truly believe boxing is rigged because after watching the fight, it didn’t seem natural.
It made a lot of sense when I saw the odds for Jones Jr getting knocked out in the second round were 79-1, the highest odds on the board. I’m excited to get excited about UFC again because it truly is a cool sport.
Well played DraftKings!
